POSITION OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (Fiji) invites applications for the position of Senior Data Management Officer within the Waste Management and Pollution Control division. This critical role will lead the management, coordination, and updating of Fiji's National Waste Inventory, ensuring data quality and harmonization across government agencies.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL WASTE INVENTORY

The Ministry is developing the National Waste Inventory as a key tool to collect, manage, and analyse data on waste generation, composition, and management practices across Fiji. This position will ensure its accuracy, consistency, and effective use while building capacity among relevant officers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop, maintain, update, and enhance the National Waste Inventory database
  2. Develop and implement protocols for data collection, entry, validation, accessibility, and reporting
  3. Liaise with government ministries and agencies to harmonize waste data across value chains
  4. Facilitate inter-agency data sharing agreements aligned with national and regional frameworks
  5. Develop and deliver training programs and guidance materials for stakeholders
  6. Provide technical support and mentoring to data entry and monitoring officers
  7. Generate analytical reports, dashboards, and data summaries for policy development
  8. Contribute to ministry planning, budgeting, awareness, and HR activities as required

POSITION DETAILS

  • Position Level: Salary Band I
  • Salary Range: FJD $48,025.95 - $61,175.92 per annum
  • Duty Station: Suva, with limited travel to divisions and districts
  • Reports to: Principal Environment Officer - WPC
  • Subordinates: Nil

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Waste Management, Information Management, or related field; OR
  • Equivalent work experience

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years professional experience in environmental data management, waste management, or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in database management, data analysis, and reporting
  • Proven ability to coordinate and liaise effectively with government and non-government stakeholders
  • Familiarity with Fiji's environmental policies, waste management frameworks, and international environmental reporting obligations

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Effective time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse datasets

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for employment must:

  • Be of good character with a background demonstrating commitment to civil service values contained in the Fijian Constitution
  • Be Fijian citizens
  • Be in sound health
  • Have a clear police record

Selected applicants will be required to provide a medical certificate and police clearance prior to taking up duty.

This position is funded and managed by the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP), with the contract administered by People 2.0 for an initial two-year period. Following this, the role will transition to funding from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
