WIOMSA 2025 Special Session: Advancing Sustainable Ocean Management through Ocean Accounting

During this year's WIOMSA Scientific Symposium, the GOAP Africa Community of Practice will run a special session to explore how Ocean Accounts can transform marine resource management in the Western Indian Ocean region.
This session is co-hosted by Pwani University and IOC Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States with support from the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) and UK Blue Planet Fund.
Join this session to learn from researchers, practitioners and experts and:
- Understand the Ocean Accounts framework and its applications for sustainable development
- Explore real-world implementations, including Kenya's groundbreaking Kilifi County pilot project
- Learn from regional experiences in Kenya, Mozambique, Madagascar, Ghana and beyond
- Discuss challenges and opportunities for national adoption
- Connect with a growing community of practice in the Western Indian Ocea
- Contribute to recommendations for advancing Ocean Accounts in national planning systems.

About WIOMSA Scientific Symposium
The WIOMSA Scientific Symposium is the largest open scientific conference in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region and focuses on vital marine and coastal issues. Occuring every three years, the event provides a unique platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders.
The 13th WIOMSA Symposium will take place from 28 September - 3 October 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya and is an endorsed UN Ocean Decade Activity.
